Make up and costume ideas

From the images, it is clear that our ghost girl should have pale make-up and be made to look like she has been dead for a long time as is seen in the picture of samara from the ring. The completely white costume from the picture above creates a freaky mental character as all white is very striking.

From this video for makeup of Samara we have decided to use black eye shadow to form dark spots on our female actors face.

Lighting design

There are three point lighting: Key, Fill and Back lights.

The Key light is the main source of light and is key to the whole set up. It is placed at a 45 degree angle which means that there will be a slight shadow across the subject.

Fill light is another mentioned in the extract. This is used on the opposite side to the Key light to fill in the shadow cast by the Key light.

The third point of lighting is called Back light. This is placed behind the subject at a low intensity to make the subject stand out more from the back ground.

Film outline

We have used varied camera angles and shots to make it seem more interesting to the audience as they will be seeing things in different ways than what they normally would.

In our first film outline we had a lot of different shots and some wouldn't have worked. The close up of the boys eyes when he sees the ghost wouldn't work because he wouldn't be looking from side to side at that point, his eyes would be still.

story board: The lullaby

The first shot is a mid-long shot to portray the location of the film. The next shot is an extreme close up of the actors eyes closing when they are going to sleep. Third shot is again another extreme close up of the actors eyes opening to show time passing. Fourth shot is mid-long shot of the actor getting up which is convey to the audience that he is somewhere else then his bedroom which we saw in the first shot. Fifth shot is an point of view shot in a pan to establish the setting and again show that he is in a different place. It is also to highlight that there is no one there and that the swings and other equipment on the park are not moving. Sixth shot is a mid- close is to see the actors reaction and so we can clearly see him turning round...

1st - Point of view shot is to again show the park but this time show the park equipment moving but no one pushing it or moving it

2nd -  Close up shot of the actors feet to show the fog forming around his feet to give it a eerie effect

3rd- Point of view at a canted angle, this it to show that there is someone there watching the actor. It is also at a canted angle to show that something isn't right.

4th- Over the shoulder shot at an eyeline level to highlight what the boy is looking at when he sees something in the distance.

5th- Extreme close up of the boys mouth to build up tension

6th- Over the shoulder shot at a canted angle when we first hear the girl singing to the boy in an eerie voice so we can see that is a girl as we can see the hair of the ghost but we still have not seen the ghosts face. 

Script and Example Scripts

We decided to make our script more like the 'A nightmare on elm street' script as there is very little dialogue in our film and the setting is more important than the speech.

Script

First scene

Simon’s Bedroom – Night

Simon Ring climbs into bed, wearing pale blue pyjamas. He’s 16. He lies in bed, he closes his eyes and falls asleep.

Second scene

Playground – Night

Simon wakes up, gets up rubbing his eyes. When he is stood up he looks around the park. All is still and quiet.

Suddenly the swing begins to move and other play ground equipment but nothing appears to be moving them.

CLOSE UP of Simon’s feet (bare foot) to see the fog form (fog added with effects).

The girl ghost is watching Simon from afar and is breathing heavily but we still haven’t seen the girls face. We see Simon stumbling around, glancing in different directions.

Simon – ‘Hello?’

Girl ghost – ‘Here comes the candle to light you to bed’ (Slow, eerie, creepy child-like voice)

Girl then disappears – Simon gasps

Girl reappears in a different place in the park – Simon glances around and sees that she is someone else.

Simon – ‘Who are you?’ (Steps towards the ghost)

GG- And here comes the chopper to chop off your head’

The she disappears again just as he gets near her and then when she says ‘Chop’ she reappears ‘Chop’ disappears and then when she says chop for the final time. She is stood behind Simon.

2nd possible location - Windmill Park, Kimberley

Here our four shots of a nearby park which we could also shoot our opening at. As a group we will look through these pictures and the other possible location and decide which is best.

Possible location: Cantelupe road, ilkeston

There are plenty of different pieces of equipment that we could use in our film, the only thing that could possible be an issue is the wide spacing of the swings, slide etc.

PITCH

MOVING PICTURES (STORYBOARDING) THE SIXTH SENSE

What is the purpose of story boarding?
To enhance the screenplay by adjusting the angles they are going to have in the scenes.
Since no film can be made without storyboarding, it can also give clear directions to the
cameraman of how to demonstrate the shots.

How does it show lighting, movement and angles?
-Sharpening the focus point of the scene
-Blackening to show where should be lightened and darkened, and where the characters' shadows should be placed
-Drawing arrows to direct the way the characters or camer should move
-Giving the ideas of the scene and cameraman might be able to adjust the angles they're going to take to fulfill the designed scenes.

Our chosen actors

 We chose to use Katie Bee for our female lead as she is average height therefore she could easily be made into a young girl especially as our male lead, Matt Smith, is much taller.

We have chosen Matt Smith as our male lead because he is fairly tall therefore he is expected to not be easily scared, adding more fear to our horror film as he will be frightened.

silent hill opening

This opening creates fear from the very beginning as the little girl is standing near to a waterfall edge which would lead to her death if she fell, creating tension from the start. The ritualistic and sacrificial sounds that we can hear makes us stare down into the darkness, waiting for what is coming next. The birds eye angle shot shows how vulnerable the girl is as she is tiny in comparison to her surroundings. From this it is evident that high angle shots should be used in our own film to make the protagonist seem weak and vulnerable.

Notes on Kyle Cooper's interview

A good opening must grab the audience's first attention and make them to have expectations on the film they are watching. Kyle used a lot of close ups in his opening sequences as he thinks those shots show the the characters' obsession directly. The font even reflects characters' personalities or occupations.

Notes on True Blood

In the opening sequence of True Blood, we can see the things we usually see in wild areas, for example swamp, crocodile, snake; and hillbilly, houses in rural area, these images might link to the underclass of the society. The sequence also shows something religious which are church, religious people who are singing in a church, rituals and even the slogan "God Hates Fangs". Sex scenes, and dead bodies of rat, wolf are shown in the opening as well, these might reflect the primitive desire of human being and the nature of lifecycle.

Notes on Seven

when we watched Seven opening credits in class we saw that there werer overlapping of shots and it was very jumpy. It was made up of extreme close ups and focused on the fingers and what the hands were doing, creating mystery.

Our target audience for our film should be female under 18 aswell.

Narrative ideas for our film

Characters:

Little girl as the ghost - 10 -13 years of age

Older teenage to play the victim that is getting haunted - 16 - 17 years old

Storyline ideas for our opening:

Boy victim wakes up in the middle of an apparently 'empty' playground and can't remember how he got there. As he gets up and looks around, different play equipment in the playground starts moving on its own. The swing starts swinging, the merry go round is moving round and the see-saw goes up and down on its own. The fog/mist starts forming at the feet of the boy victim and he can see a human shape through the fog. As it clears he sees a little girl and he calls out to her. The girl doesn't reply and instead sings a nursery rhyme in a slow, creepy voice. The victim keeps calling out to her and starts to walk towards her but as he does the girl disappears and moves to a different part of the park. The girl laughs at the boy as he becomes annoyed at her from moving and disappears again. The boy is glancing around and can’t see her. He sees something on the ground and goes to pick it up as he bends down the girl is stood behind him…

Costume:

The costume for our ghost will be dressed in a white, bloody, old fashioned dress and a long black matted wig which covers her face.

The make up on the ghost is a white pale face, with black tear lines down her face and red sore eyes.

The boy would be in his pyjamas so it gives the illusion that he has woken up and that it is happening at night time.

Setting:

The setting of our film is in a playground at night time. However, as members of my group said that it was difficult to film at night we will film in the day and add the dark effect when we edit it. Therefore, the lighting would be just natural daylight. Another effect that we will add is a grey/blue tint to the film as in The Ring, it gave a eerie effect to the opening and made it seem like something dark and dangerous was about to happen.
